Join Coach Ewunike on this 8 day, 7 night active adventure on the Southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Your fitness retreat includes surfing, yoga, hiking, waterfall exploration and fitness classes. Once you are in Costa Rica, your ground transportation and round trip airfare to Pavones from San Jose are included, as well as many other trip amenities. It is finally your time to unwind and enjoy your retreat.

Your retreat guide and fitness coach, Ewunike Akpan, is a certified personal trainer, group exercise instructor, and adventure lover. Her fitness training style and principles focus on developing functional and strong bodies. She wants her retreat participants to be able to challenge themselves physically and participate in activities, like surfing, which they may have never done before. Participants will use strength they’ve typically gained in controlled workout environments to enjoy this fun, exciting, and rejuvenating experience. This retreat is about fine tuning your strength and taking it to the next level.

Surf and Yoga:
This retreat is being hosted in Pavones primarily because our amazing surf and yoga instructor, Amy Khoo, lives there! She is the owner of Shooting Star Yoga Studio, a beautiful, large, and inviting space just 30 meters from the beach and overlooking the warm waters of the surf break. Amy has been practicing yoga since 1990 and at her studio, she teaches according to the needs of her varied students. Her classes for this retreat will focus on the practice of restorative sequences to balance the fitness and surfing activities. Amy and her husband, Alex, lifelong surfers, skilled instructors, and nature guides will share their love for this unique beach location with us.

Retreat Overview:
Your retreat starts in the capital city of San Jose. The day after you arrive, your adventure begins with an exploration of 7 waterfalls, hiking, and a garden and wild animal nature preserve tour. We will visit one of the most popular attractions in Costa Rica, LaPaz Waterfall Gardens, and experience an engaging introduction to . One day 3, we will travel from the capital to Pavones on the southern Pacific coast. Included in the package are two surf lessons in the warm waters of the Gulfo Dulce. The lessons are geared toward the beginner surfer, but the experience is perfect for all skill levels. Fitness classes on the beach with Ewunike and yoga classes with Amy will provide daily activity to strengthen and stretch your fitness to new limits. Daily walks along the beach and road to and from activities provides active transport and plenty of opportunity to meet locals and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty!

During your free time, you are welcome to sign up for additional activities, such as stand up paddle boarding, horseback riding, massages, and more.

Retreat Itinerary

Sunday, November 12:

  • Arrive at Costa Rica’s San Jose Airport (code: SJO) and take the provided shuttle to Barceló San José Palacio Hotel
  • Enjoy a fresh coconut upon arrival and get settled in
  • Ewunike will host a meet & greet dinner to help everyone get acquainted and prepare for the retreat
  • After dinner at Hotel Barceló , get your groove on with your first physical activity – Salsa lessons!

Monday, November 13:

  • Wake up to a morning stretch session in the fitness room
  • Fresh breakfast buffet at Hotel Barceló 
  • Depart for an exciting adventure of waterfall and nature preserve exploration at LaPaz Waterfall Gardens
  • Upon our return, a happy hour celebration will be offered in the hotel lounge
  • There will be a review of the itinerary and Phase 2 of the retreat starts with early morning departure for Pavones!
  • The rest of the evening is yours to enjoy

Tuesday, November 14:

  • Early morning departure from San Jose airport to Golfito Airport and taking the provided shuttle to La Ponderosa Resort
  • Breakfast and orientation at the resort
  • The rest of the day is yours to relax on the beach, cool off in the pool, hike the trails on the resort, or explore the town of Pavones
  • Lunch at La Ponderosa resort
  • In the evening, Ewunike will lead a stretch & mobility class to prepare the body for rest and restoration
  • Dinner at La Ponderosa resort

Wednesday, November 15:

  • This morning is reserved for our first surf lesson on the Costa Rican waves!
  • Lunch at La Ponderosa
  • Beach walk to the yoga studio
  • Hot yoga at Shooting Star Studio
  • Dinner at La Ponderosa

Thursday, November 16:

  • LOTUS Fitness on the beach
  • Breakfast at La Ponderosa
  • Amy will lead the group on an invigorating walk up the Rio Claro River and prepare fresh spa body treatments that we will use along the river’s edge
  • Dinner at La Ponderosa

Friday, November 17:

  • Breakfast at La Ponderosa
  • This morning is reserved for our second surf lesson on the Costa Rican waves!
  • Lunch at La Ponderosa
  • Free time
  • Yoga for Surf at Shooting Star Studio

Saturday, November 18:

The Accommodations

Our first two nights will be at the Barcelo Hotel & Resort in San Jose.  The hotel features three restaurants, two outdoor swimming pools, a fitness center, a tennis court, and acres of quiet gardens.
On day 3, Tuesday November 14, the group will travel from San Jose to Pavones. In Pavones, we will be staying at La Ponderosa Beach & Jungle Resort. This small, family-owned, boutique retreat center provides healthy and fresh meals, beautiful grounds with trails and gardens, and pool and beach access to refresh and unwind. The individual, spacious cottages sleep 2-4 people, and are just steps from the pristine beach, relaxing swimming pool, and half a mile from Shooting Star Yoga Studio. Also on the property are hiking trails, volleyball court, basketball courts, and massage services (extra cost). Each day, three healthy meals are made fresh for you from local ingredients. The town of Pavones is very remote and boasts a population of just a couple hundred residents.  The town comes to life every day at dawn when people take advantage of the natural beauty the location has to offer.

Meet Ewunike Akpan with LOTUS Fitness

After participating in the 330 mile AIDS Bike Ride from Raleigh, NC to Washington, D.C. in 1999, Ewunike Akpan was hooked on helping people experience the benefits of exercise. To prepare for the ride, she trained for six months with a group and, along the way, learned the importance of proper muscular development and nutrition to help her successfully complete the three day event. She shared information with her fellow riders and started leading them in weight training sessions to strengthen their core and upper body muscles. The group gave Ewunike positive feedback about the effectiveness of  the workouts she developed. This fueled her decision to study for and get certified as a professional personal trainer with the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

Ewunike’s 16-year journey as a trainer started as a way to help herself and others for one fitness event. Today, it is her passion and she is using it to help hundreds of clients experience the benefits of an active lifestyle. Ewunike and her business, LOTUS Fitness, have been featured in Essence, Heart & Soul, ACE Professionals Profile (online), ACE Advocacy (online) and on NBC4 News,Washington, D.C.
